It's about a succulent plant originally from Tanzania, with a very simple cultivation and slow growth. Although it is a evergreen plant, it tends to become deciduous when it is faced with particularly dry periods.

Its dimensions are decidedly contained: it reaches in fact a maximum height of about 60cm. THE drums that make up the plant are erect and fleshy, the latter characteristic that they share with the leaves. Being a succulent plant, in fact, it will present fleshy, shiny and elliptical leaves. Not only that: gods will be visible at the base of the leaves bulges deputies to store water in case of need.

If you are looking for succulent plants that can ensure a beautiful flowering, these are the ones for you!

But why the Zamioculcas zamilifolia is it known as the Padre Pio plant? First of all, it is said that Padre Pio himself always had a specimen of this plant with him and, secondly, the stems produce a particular latex that looks like tears.

Padre Pio plant: soil and exposure

As for the cultivation of the Padre Pio plant, the first information to keep in mind are those relating to the soil and exposure.

Let's start with ground. The main feature is that this is it well drained; in addition, it would be optimal to also have a slightly acidic substrate (to do this, it is always better to know how to measure the pH of the soil). You can learn more about the topic concerning the soil of succulent plants in this article.

The exhibition, on the other hand, it can be a bit problematic. In fact, the Padre Pio plant is a plant that does need exposure in full light, but at the same time the leaves could be affected and dry out. For this reason, cultivation in the apartment is often preferred.

In general, however, you could move it outside in the months from May to September. However, take care to keep it in a half-shade position and do it gradually acclimate to the light.

Padre Pio plant: cultural care

Although it is a plant whose cultivation it is relatively simple, some important precautions will be necessary.

First, the irrigations. These are essential for the well-being of your Padre Pio plant and must increase as the temperature rises. The secret is to never let the soil dry out totally, but at the same time being careful of do not create water stagnation at the level of the saucer. Furthermore, during the winter months we advise you to reduce irrigation, even without suspending them completely: although it is in fact a plant capable of resisting even long periods of drought, the consequence of an effort in this sense will be a penalization of its growth and the well-being of the leaves.

There fertilizationinstead, it must be carried out only during the vegetative period, therefore in the months between March and September. The fertilizer chosen must be nitrogen free and you will have to administer it every two weeks together with the irrigation water.

Manageable crop care and a beautiful ornamental effect: the Padre Pio plant is perfect for the apartment or the balcony

Finally, let's see the repotting operations, which must be carried out every two or three years:

  • split the roots with a knife, paying close attention
  • delete the dry parts or appear to be compromised
  • arranges the expanded clay and the mix of soil and sand inside the new pot
  • water abundantly
  • keep the jar covered for about fourteen days with some transparent plastic; in this way you will create the right humidity to make your Padre Pio plant recover in the best possible way

Possible and frequent diseases of the Padre Pio plant

Although the Padre Pio plant is very robust, resistant and healthy, the most dangerous parasite it could run into is the cochineal: here you can find out how to prevent its presence and how to treat any infestation.

In addition this plant could suffer from problems related to wrong irrigation:

  • if you had watered the plant excessively you might notice a vast leaf yellowing
  • if you had watered too little the plant you might notice a progressive instead decay of the leaves

In the first case we advise you to repot and eliminate the parts of the plant that are now irrecoverable, completely replacing the soil; in the second case, however, you will have to insert your vase inside a basin of water and wait until water bubbles stop appearing on the surface.

Nelle nostre zone appaiono in marzo.
