Medicinal plants in your beds

Medicinal plants in your beds

Nowadays, more and more amateur gardeners and gardeners appear - it is pleasant, useful, although not always easy, to tinker with the land. I also count myself among them and try to grow on my site different, including useful plants that are quite rare so far in our places, which are often also medicinal.

I want to tell the readers about some of them. Everyone knows such a popular plant as sowing garlic, its characteristic pungent taste and strong odor. It is commonly used as a vegetable in cooking.

pickles, marinades

, in the canning and sausage industry, garlic gives products a sharp and spicy taste, a specific aroma.

However, not everyone makes full use of the healing power of this plant. Possessing many healing properties,

since ancient times it has been used as an effective remedy against scurvy, gastrointestinal tract disorders, as a diuretic, anthelmintic, in the treatment of malaria, edema, headache, spleen enlargement, suffocating cough, bronchial asthma, and gallbladder disease.

With the help of garlic gruel or juice, warts, lichens, eczema are removed. To strengthen the hair, garlic juice is rubbed into the skin. With a cold, the gruel from the cloves is wrapped in gauze and put into the nostrils for 10-15 minutes in the morning and in the evening. For the prevention of colds, garlic is taken orally with grated apple and honey, or simply swallowed in pieces. Garlic baked in dough is used to treat festering wounds, it is applied instead of mustard plasters for sciatica, sciatica, muscle pain in the lumbar region, for the rapid ripening of abscesses.

Garlic is used to prepare medications that help improve the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, stimulate cardiac activity, treat hypertension, atherosclerosis, purulent pneumonia, etc. Our family has been cultivating garlic for a very long time, we grow many different varieties, we plant it both in spring and before winter. I believe that every family should have the opportunity and know how to use the wonderful nutritional and medicinal properties of this wonderful plant.

We also grow three types

phytolacca (lakonos)

... It is curative

perennial herb

up to 1.5 m high.

folk medicine

all parts of the plant are used. An acquaintance of mine cured a benign tumor with lakonos berries. He crushed them into gruel and covered the growths, changing the gruel as it dries. I took a small amount of berries internally, and after 45 days the wen began to decrease, and on the 85th day it disappeared. A decoction of phytolacca berries helps to lower blood pressure, and a decoction of leaves and roots is a good expectorant, laxative, diuretic, antihelminthic agent.

From the root of the lakonos (from a three-year plant) make an infusion and tincture, which are used to treat laryngitis, follicular sore throat, polyarthritis, rheumatism, radiculitis, osteochondrosis. The roots are dug out at the end of October, washed in cold water, crushed and dried in the oven at a temperature of 55 ... 60 ° C. For internal use, prepare an infusion (5 g of dry root per 1 tbsp. Boiling water, take 1 tbsp. L. Three times a day), for external use - a tincture, which is prepared in two ways:

1) Pour 0.5 liters of vodka or 70 degree alcohol into 1 glass of crushed and dried roots of the lakonos, infuse for a week in a warm, dark place.

2) take 0.5 cups of dry crushed root, 1 tbsp. spoon

and 0.5 liters of alcohol or vodka, leave for 7-10 days in a dark, warm place. Tinctures have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, they are used externally, rubbing sore spots and for rinsing (1 tablespoon of tincture per 1 glass of warm salted water) for tonsillitis and pharyngitis. To enhance the effect of the tincture, add 0.5 cups of freshly picked or 2 tablespoons of dried white lilac flowers. For pain in the joints, the tincture is prepared in kerosene or sunflower oil (1 glass of kerosene or oil and 0.5 cups of lakonos roots).

Grows well with us mad cucumber or prickly... It is a perennial herb with creeping stems. The leaves are large, lobed, covered with stiff hairs, the flowers are bright yellow. The thorny greenish fruits of this plant resemble small cucumbers. By the time of ripening, great pressure arises in them, and even with a light touch, the fruit "explodes", and the seeds surrounded by mucus scatter in all directions at a distance of about 12 m.

The prickly plant blooms in July, August, the fruits ripen in August - September. Distributed in the Mediterranean, in southern and eastern Europe, in Asia Minor and Central. Crazy cucumber has strong laxative, diuretic, antihelminthic properties. In medical practice, infusion of herbs and juice of unripe fruits are used as a strong diuretic for renal edema, especially for dropsy, jaundice, viral hepatitis. In folk medicine, mad cucumber preparations are used as an antihelminthic agent.

For medicinal purposes, the aboveground part is harvested during flowering. The stems are cut into pieces and dried in the shade. The raw material is considered ready if the stems do not bend when bent, but break. The whole plant is poisonous, therefore, treatment is carried out on the recommendation and under the supervision of a doctor. It is grown in the warmest and sunniest area, as usually in central Russia the fruits do not have time to ripen.

For those who want to grow interesting and medicinal varieties of winter and spring garlic, onion, three varieties of lakonos, mad cucumber, mountain arnica, Manchurian aralia, astragalus, initial caps, dushevik, Caucasian and Nippon dioxorea, angelica, loosestrife, jaundice, zyuzny, kanatrionnik , mullein, burnet and many other medicinal plants, I can offer their seeds for sowing before winter, since many medicinal herbs require stratification, i.e. exposure to cold seeds for good germination in spring.

For orders, I am sending you a detailed catalog with a full description of the plants. To receive it, I expect from you an envelope with a return address of the A-4 format with stamps pasted on it for 30 rubles: the catalog is voluminous and heavy, it does not fit into an ordinary envelope with the letter A. Write: Brizhan Valery Ivanovich - st. Kommunarov d. 6, st. Chelbasskaya, Kanevskaya district, Krasnodar Territory, 353715.

Step 3. Fill in the scheme

Now you can start adding plants to the map. First, write them in with a pencil, so that in which case it is easy to change the location of the vegetables in the garden. Our garden is not too big, it can accommodate two regular beds and two tall ones. Since they are all well illuminated by the sun, we will plant root crops or plants with deep roots in ordinary beds. Crops with smaller roots will do well in tall beds.

Vegetable garden scheme (draft version)

If your garden is just as small, try to conventionally divide the beds into squares. Knowing how many square meters you have in one sector, you can determine how many plants will fit in each of them. For example, about 5 tomato seedlings can be planted on 1 square meter of soil. For other crops, see the table below.

Number of seeds / seedlings per 1 m2

Calamus marsh - the best helper in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. This plant is useful if you need to relieve heartburn, gastritis and poisoning. The plant is used for periodontal disease and sore throat (in the form of rinsing). And baths using calamus can alleviate the condition of fungal diseases of the skin and nails, eczema and children's diathesis.

Althea officinalis - a recognized fighter against colds. In addition, it is used as a coating for colitis and enterocolitis. Marshmallow mucus is an excellent cosmetic used to soften rough skin.

Mountain arnica and other species are indispensable in the country arsenal of medicinal plants, especially if both children and elderly people are resting on the site. Young summer residents will need a tincture of arnica flowers. It helps to get rid of bruises and scratches, and for the elderly - to improve cerebral circulation.

Scientists have found that arnica preparations have a choleretic and anti-inflammatory effect, which is useful for cholecystitis.

Elecampane high - a folk healer who can overcome many ailments. The plant will help to cope with the chronic cough, and the infusion on Cahors will raise the level of hemoglobin in the blood. Elecampane is an excellent remedy for the autumn blues. Elecampane preparations are useful after suffering from influenza and pneumonia.

St. John's wort - a real "green doctor". People call it a plant for 99 ailments. The infusion and decoction help with indigestion, inflammation of the gums and throat. Alcohol tincture is recommended as a remedy for depression and dysbiosis, and St. John's wort is recommended for burns and runny nose.

Calendula - an elegant "doll" in the flower garden. Bright baskets of plants decorate the garden almost until frost. Homemade ointment quickly heals wounds and cracks in the skin. The tincture helps with colds and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. A decoction of flowers has long been known as a good cosmetic product.

Motherwort heart, or five-lobed, - a wonderful sedative that will help you fall asleep if the working day is too stressful. A harmless motherwort is prescribed even for children and expectant mothers. Motherwort is more versatile than, for example, the well-known sedative - valerian.

Common agrimony little known and still underestimated by our summer residents. Infusion of agrimony with honey proved to be excellent in the treatment of stomach ulcers. Tea made from it is recommended for pain in the intestines, colitis, enteritis. Many herbalists consider it a miracle cure for intestinal polyposis. In the form of gargling, agrimony is used for diseases of the throat and gums.

Meadowsweet, or meadowsweet, - will save you from colds and headaches. The derivatives of salicylic acid contained in the plant thin the blood. Present in meadowsweet and substances that improve cerebral circulation, increase the resistance of the brain to hypoxia (lack of oxygen).

On the strength of the action of meadowsweet is comparable to the preparations of ginkgo biloba. Tea made from it is an excellent remedy for gout and rheumatoid arthritis. Tavolga tincture on vodka with a good effect is used in the treatment of herpes; in order to prevent it, it is taken in spring and autumn to prevent the destructive effect of the virus.

Echinacea purpurea - hit the country flower garden and home first aid kit. An alcoholic tincture of the plant, when applied externally, relieves pain if the joints ache, and when applied internally, it perfectly strengthens the immune system.

Examples of mixed beds

Most often, with a mixed planting technique, three vegetable crops are planted in the beds - early, main and subsequent. In this case, it is imperative to take into account the previous plant, as well as the compatibility of different crops.

In the spring, after warming up the soil and pretreating it, early crops are planted with a solid carpet - for example, lettuce (early), radish. By the time they mature, they are thinned out and the next plant is planted.

With a mixed planting of vegetables, staggered plants are most effective. After the radish and salad, you can plant beans or spinach, which will ripen at the same time as the remaining radish.

When these vegetable crops are harvested, leaf and head lettuce and cucumbers can be planted in their place. Kohlrabi, broccoli, or cabbage are good options. The optimal time for planting them is mid-July.

An example of a mixed planting of vegetable crops:

  1. Prepare the soil after the snow has melted and sow watercress or lettuce.
  2. After the greens have ripened and the harvest has been harvested, early potatoes can be planted in its place.
  3. Depending on the variety, potatoes ripen in early or mid June. After that, grown seedlings of Peking cabbage or kohlrabi can be planted in the beds. These vegetables are planted until early July.

Mixed landings can be different. For example, after harvesting early potatoes, strawberry or strawberry rosettes can be rooted in the beds.

Mini-vegetable garden in warm beds

My mini garden

I have said more than once that I have a small dacha, only 6 acres. The house takes up a lot of space, so there is not much space for a vegetable garden and flower beds. And to be honest, I didn't plan a vegetable garden at all. Firstly, because I did not know how to grow anything, and secondly, our soil is sandy, so it is extremely problematic to grow something on it. Everything dries up instantly. And you need to fertilize constantly. But my husband insisted that at least greenery should grow in the country. But again everything grew extremely poorly on the sand. Then we decided to experiment with such warm beds, into which chernozem was poured. At first there were 5 small, 2 meters and 1.2 meters. Then I really liked them, and in 3 years there were 13 beds. All of them are of different sizes - from 1.2 m to 3 m. The width is also different - from 60 cm to 80 cm. I really like my beds.

The advantages of warm bulk beds are that, first of all, good fertile soil can be covered in them, and in order not to dry out, mulch with grass. It is not necessary to dig the entire area, but simply loosen the beds. Now I have a lot to grow on them. And all would be fine, but between the beds the grass grows catastrophically quickly! My row spacings are small, about 40 cm, and my mower does not work (if you decide to make the same stationary warm beds, make the spacings wider: the plants will have more light and air, and it will be much more comfortable to walk between them when they grow, and you can just mow the grass). Therefore, I had to harvest the grass by hand more often than weeding the beds themselves. It really bothered me.
Last year I talked about how we made our beds, there is a post in the competition for summer cottage master classes for the past year. There is grass between the beds.

Garden beds last year

This is how the garden looked like when it was overgrown with grass (the beds the year before last).

And I still decided to modernize and, so to speak, improve my garden. I covered the aisles with fine gravel. To do this, I removed all the grass between the rows, I had to tinker! I cut a black film into even strips, laid it on the ground and covered it with rubble.

It took a little less than half a cube to cover my entire area. Now the garden looks like this and makes me happy much more than before. Many are against rubble on the site, but I really like it. Both beautifully and neatly, and the grass between the beds finally does not grow.

My modernized vegetable garden

If we talk about the fact that I didn't want to grow vegetables just in the beds, then I don't even want to hear about the greenhouse. Firstly, I have little space, and in the same greenhouse it is not advised to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants at the same time, so you need not one greenhouse, but at least 2. It requires a lot of care, from cleaning snow from winter to washing and various treatments from the inside. I think many will agree with me that the greenhouse has its advantages, but there are also disadvantages.

In our strip, of course, spring and summer are very cold. And somehow you still need to insulate your little ones. Until I'm ready for the greenhouse (maybe someday?), So I use a conventional covering material such as agrospan or spunbond. This year I replaced the whole one with a new one with a density of 60. It is used for homemade greenhouses.Indeed, compared to the 42 that I had, it is much denser.

The most important thing for me is that I can easily open and close my mini greenhouses. I've tried different ways. And she fixed the greenhouses with boards, but this is ugly, and the whole garden is in boards, and they are heavy. I tied the ends of the material in a knot and tied with elastic bands, but this is also not very convenient. And this year, somehow by itself, this is the way it turned out. I just twist the ends of the agrotex, press with a stone on one side and stretch. And I also wrap and press on the other side. Everything is very simple! The main thing is to pull it harder, and when I need to open the greenhouse, I lift the material and fix it on the arcs with small holders. Maybe you will like this method. It is very convenient!

Covering the greenhouses

This is how my garden looks like now. It’s very cold so far, so I don’t open my flowers, only if during the day, when the sun is shining.

Planted in my beds:

  • 15 pieces of sweet pepper
  • 9 pieces of eggplant
  • 2 beds are occupied by cucumbers
  • I took 3 beds under the greenery
  • strawberries occupy one bed
  • and a total of 36 bushes of tomatoes, including undersized and medium-sized.

For example, from the Gardens of Russia Raspberry Heart and Raspberry Joy.

A neighbor brought me strawberries. It was enough for me to plant it on a garden bed 80 cm wide in 2 rows. If I like strawberries, then I will plant them in the middle in a checkerboard pattern.

Pepper tolerated the transplant perfectly.

I just planted the eggplants, I'll see in a couple of days how they will take root.
Someone will say that I have planted very little of everything, but personally for our small family this is quite enough. I don’t do preservation, we don’t really like salinity, and it’s quite enough to eat fresh vegetables and berries grown by our own hands in summer. I would like this summer to be warmer than the past, and the harvest will delight us. I wish you a great harvest in your beds too!
